Background: Dyslexia is variously defined as:
“.. a condition that makes it extremely difficult to read, write or spell despite being of at least average intelligence... a neurologically-based, often familial, disorder which interferes with the acquisition and processing of language... manifested by difficulties in receptive and expressive language, including phonological processing, in reading, writing, spelling, handwriting, and sometimes in arithmetic... not the result of lack of motivation, sensory impairment, inadequate instructional or environmental opportunities, or other limiting conditions... whilst dyslexia is life-long, individuals frequently respond successfully to timely and appropriate intervention”.
It is estimated that the incidence of dyslexia in the general population is between 5% and 10%. The problems experienced by adults are often made worse by poor understanding / recognition of the condition, both in educational life and at work. The Disability Discrimination Act (1995) makes it a legal requirement for employers to make provision for adults with disabilities, including dyslexia.
The Dyslexia Adult Screening Test is designed for routine use with the adult population. The test will identify the presence of dyslexia in adults (whether or not they have largely overcome their reading difficulties) and will provide an early measure of the extent to which the individual is 'at risk' of the condition. Itis not a single test but rather a series of eleven discrete assessments on a range of dimensions. Each of the assessments is scored individually but results are also combined to give an overall 'At Risk Quotient'.
The test incorporates measures of reading, writing, spelling, working memory, fluency, non-verbal reasoning, postural stability and others. Assessments are conducted sensitively, on a one-to-one basis, with scoring and report writing normally being done after the event. The Dyslexia Adult Screening Test will frequently be sufficient to allow individuals (and employers) to understand the issues most likely to be problematic in the employment setting. That is, the profile provided can be used to guide intervention strategies and/or accommodations in the workplace. However, depending upon results and the implications, people who are deemed to be most 'at risk' may then benefit from a more comprehensive assessment* in order to develop a detailed or intense plan of support, which in turn can be used to accommodate their specific strengths and weaknesses.
[* Please note: A complete assessment for dyslexia can take up to a whole day, with costs of £1000 upwards. We do NOT offer this kind of assessment but may be able to direct you to those who specialise in the field].
